Launch Hook

The first 1–3 seconds of a short-form video designed to stop someone from scrolling.

A launch hook is the opening moment of a short-form launch video — typically 1–3 seconds — designed to capture attention and make the viewer want to keep watching.

On platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, most people decide whether to keep watching within the first two seconds. A strong hook names a specific pain, makes a bold claim, or opens a curiosity loop.

Hook structures that work for SaaS products include: the pain hook ("You just shipped a product and now need launch content for 6 different channels"), the claim hook ("This tool turned my product URL into a complete launch pack in 4 minutes"), the POV hook (placing the viewer in a recognizable scenario), and the demo-first hook (opening on the most impressive output before any explanation).

A weak hook typically starts with the product name, a greeting ("Hi, I'm..."), or a generic benefit statement. These fail because they give the viewer no reason to invest the next 30 seconds.
